My name is Dmitry Novikov, and I am here to help you tell your amazing stories.
# But before, I want to tell my story
In 2013, my pet project “KIT Scenarist” was born. At the start, it was a simple editor who could save text in a script format and save the names of characters and locations.
After six years of development with your support, the program has grown substantially and now it is a full-featured assistant to the author. I have added in the app new helpful tools such as documents research organizer, corkboard, statistic module, and many other useful functions that help people from all over the world (the program is translated into 18 languages) tell their stories without being distracted by the routine formatting operations and without worrying about font settings , connecting spelling dictionaries and things like that.
Now more than 4,000 authors work with the program every day, and I see that the program has long been used not only for writing screenplays, many of you write scripts for TV-series, video blogs and even comics in it. So I think, that it's time to take care of the necessary toolset for each of you.
# It's time to move on
So what's the new version?
New user interface
The program will receive a new interface that each of you can customize for yourself.
You will get a fast, smooth, scalable interface with the ability to change the color scheme of the application to your liking.
Work with series projects
For the authors of the series, I will add the opportunity to work on all the series of the story within one project. Each series will be available through a single project interface and will no longer have to worry about the project’s bible hasn't latest updates — it will now always be up to date.
Collaboration tools will be expanded with a set of functions for organizing the work of the writing team - the possibility of drawing up a series plan, the work of co-authors on individual series, the built-in chat with the ability to drag and drop a link to a part of the text, a comment, or a document within the project, and even a notification system about changes in the project.
Screenplays for the TV-shows, documentary and stage play
For the writers of documentaries, TV shows and plays, new templates will be added, as well as new features, such as working with dual dialogues and embedding images directly into the text.
For comic makers, a separate template will be provided for creating a comic book script, as well as the ability to add page layouts to cards, and you'll be able to create layouts yourself since the new version will be integrated graphics editor.
For computer game scriptwriters, I plan to add a system of branching dialogues and storylines, depending on the choice of the hero. A deeper description of the characters, locations and even items that make up the game world.
Novelists will find in the program ready-made templates for writing and layout of their future book, as well as built-in capabilities for creating electronic books.
In addition to specific things, the new version of the program will include new tools that will help for any author.
A timeline will appear - so that you can visually follow the development of events by arranging on it the scenes of a film or series of a series in chronological order.
The corkboard will be improved, so that the author could not only place the scene cards in the rows and columns but could work with it, as with a real board — lay the cards as convenient as on the real one, add images to the board, add connections between the cards, cut, glue and stack the cards in a pile.
The ability to view the change history of any of the documents will be added, which will allow you to view the full chronology of the creation of your history, and give you the opportunity, if necessary, to roll back to any version of it.
New statistic tools will appear, for example, the Bechdel test and the ability to view collaborators activity.
Let's bring up motivation - the program will have the opportunity to control the workflow, the ability to set goals, such as the number of words, for the session and the project as a whole, the ability to track statistics and work rhythm.
A single project library will be adapted to create works of various genres and forms within a single, unified universe, be it a film adaptation of a comic, or a feature film based on the series.
# All this will be possible when transferring the program to a new architecture
Now it's obvious that for such a large project it is very difficult to go ahead using the initial foundation, which was selected for the implementation of a text editor. This led to the fact that major innovations provoke unreasonable complication of the program code and, subsequently, errors in the program itself. It has become almost impossible to add new cool features, such as working with series projects. That's why I have decided to transfer the app to the new architecture.
And here I will need your help. Moving a program to a new architecture is like writing it from scratch, it will take years for me to do this development, but I suggest you help me speed up this process.
# The funds raised will speed up development five times, and by the end of the year, version 0.8.0 of the program will be ready to use
| Work on version 0.8.0
| - multiseries projects
| - improved research editors
| - graphics editor
| - workflow control tools
| Work on version 0.8.1
| - showrunner tools
| - timeline
| - corkboard improvements
| - new statistics abilities
| Work on version 0.9.0
| - documentary
| - comics
| - plays
| - TV-show
| - dual dialogues
| - embedded images in the text
| Work on version 0.9.1
| - novels
| - interactive scripts
To implement version 0.8.0, which will include all current KIT Scenarist functionality, plus the ability to work with series projects, improved research editors and workflow tools we need to collect 1,000,000 rubles (about $15,600), of which:
5,000 rubles (about $80) - commission of the boomstarter.ru
35,000 rubles (about $540) - commission of payment systems
130,000 rubles (about $2,000) - taxes
40,000 rubles (about $620) - the cost of printing and mailing stickers (based on the fact that the company will be supported by 400 participants from Russia, the cost of printing one sticker and delivery will be 100 rubles (~$1.5))
795,000 rubles (about $12,300) rubles - development costs.
In the new version of the program, we will move to the Delayed Open Source distribution model with the release of major updates about once every 100 days. In essence, this means that there will be two versions of the application: a commercial one - including all the latest developments - and a free one, which will functionally lag behind the paid version for one update. Let me give you an example: when, say, version 0.8.1 is released, version 0.8.0 becomes free with its source code published.
By participating in the campaign, you will get the opportunity to use a version that includes the latest developments, plus additional bonuses that will be available only as part of the crowdfunding campaign.
# Together we will create the best software for storytellers
During the development of the program has become for me something much more than just a hobby. I see how it helps each of you to create something new, something creative, and this inspires me to work on it more and more, to create and add more and more tools so that your every story can be told exactly as you want to do.
Together, we have already made this project an excellent help for the narrator of any level, from beginner to pro, but this is only the beginning of the road.
It's time to make another step forward. Together!
